Another AMU Chair Resigns
Fri, Feb23, 2007 - Category: University
Ave Maria University has a short history of existence
but a long history of faculty resignations. Included
in that list are the chairmen from The Department of
Economics and The Department of Philosophy. Now, add
to that list the Chairman of the Department of Sacred
Music, who just resigned over a dispute with
administration.
UPDATE, 3/4 - here
UPDATE, 3/4 - here
Diana Silva recently resigned as as chair, and will
be leaving AMU this summer. It is reported by
multiple sources, though unconfirmed officially, that
she is leaving on principle - that the individual who
oversees AMU's liturgy will not allow Silva to choose
her music.
Silva is exceptionally qualified to lead liturgical music. She came to AMU with stellar credentials, including a Master's degree in Church Music, studies in Europe, tours with symphonies in New York and San Francisco, and a faculty position at UC-Davis. She is best known as the Founder and Director of Voci del Tesoro (Voices of the Treasure), a 13-member touring group of professional musicians "dedicated to the prayerful presentation of the Catholic Church's finest music through sacred concerts and liturgies". The group received an Apostolic Blessing in 2001. Silva also oversees ChoralTreasure.org
Voci del Tesoro will no longer be "Choir in Residence" at AMU.
Further evidence of staffing issues exists. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, AMU's small Latin American campus is also trying to fill an number of faculty and administrative positions in:
Business Administration
Dean of Academics
Executive Director of Student Services
Mathematics
English
Philosophy
